Summer of Promise by Amanda Cabot

4.1 out of 5 stars
Abigail Harding's life is set in motion. She lives in Vermont, loves it there, and plans to marry a wonderful man. When her sister's correspondence shows signs of deep distress and melancholy, Abigail decides to visit her--at Fort Laramie, located in the wilds of Wyoming territory. When she arrives in the territory, she can't help but notice the land is boring, lacking in greenery, and it looks like desolation. Once Abigail attends to her sister, she plans to head to right back to Vermont. Her sister's situation turns out be more complicated than she originally anticipated. As the summer passes, Abigail is drawn to the rugged land and to a certain solider determined to persuade her to stay. When her time to leave arrives, will she dare return to the life she once new?

Summer of Promise is an interesting story.

Amanda Cabot's writing is quite vivid. This is the first book I've ever read by her, and her writing style truly struck me as one that is not only easy to digest, but one of sophistication, as well. My only pet peeve was the extreme overuse of the word "for" as a conjunction.

While the story is very enjoyable and engaging, there are times when readers might find themselves truly wondering if there's any central conflict within the story. With most stories, the conflict centers around something the character wants most. Summer of Promise is not the like most stories, though.

Amanda Cabot has created a female character whose longing is to help everyone around her. While the personal conflict is not the main character's, the main character does take the conflicts of the secondary characters to heart. It's as though their conflicts are transferred onto her in a way that actually creates conflict for her.

I love the setting for this story. I've always been fascinated with Fort Laramie. In all honesty, the place has always struck me as an interesting setting for any story. I'm glad Amanda Cabot chose this amazing historical landmark for her current release.

There was one moment in the story that seemed way overblown to me. By overblown, I mean way overly dramatic to the point that it seemed illogical. It may simply be the result of telling that scene from the wrong character point of view.

For those who enjoy light-hearted romances, you'll definitely love Summer of Promise. It comes included with a mystery, as well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment! After reading the book, I feel like I've had the chance to explore this landmark in a way that I never could by studying online park guides. It's still on my bucket list, but I know more about it now. I'm really glad you did a story there! Can't wait for Charlotte's story!
